If this is your first visit to Whitby you will find the surrounding cliffs and the North York Moors, opening out to the panoramic views of the Dales, provide a stunning backdrop to this bustling town, which is steeped in history. And even those who live within regular visiting distance will always find something to attract and bring them back.
There are two areas of Whitby to explore, separated by the River Esk and the harbour, with a swing bridge connecting both of them. The old town on the East side, where Greens is situated - just over the bridge on the right hand side - has ancient cobbled streets to take you towards the 199 well worn steps up to the remains of the Gothic Whitby Abbey dating back to 657AD. Take in the Bram Stoker “Dracula Trail” guided tour and visit the Captain Cook Museum.
The Whitby Museum and Pannet Park Art Gallery can show you all about the local natural history as well as the history of Whitby and its close association with the sea.
Whitby is charming and romantic, with such a variety of things to do whatever the weather. From admiring the views, taking a stroll along the beautiful sandy beaches, to popping in and out of the many different shops and galleries, not forgetting the jewellery shops that sell the famous Whitby Jet.
You can travel just that little bit further afield and explore the surrounding coastline and countryside which is studded with little jewels of places to visit. Staithes, Robin Hood’s Bay, Sandsend, Runswick Bay – they all have a history and charm of their own. Scarborough is a larger seaside town, Goathland is home to the “Heartbeat” TV series and Grosmont has the working steam railway to take you on a wonderful scenic journey. Travel over the rolling Moors to the ancient and historic town of York, just over an hour away, and stroll along the Castle Wall, visit The Shambles, enjoy market day. So much to see and do, just on the doorstep of Whitby.
